These superstar singers have a lot in common: both have moms who are actresses, both had breakout roles on the Disney Channel, they were born only months apart, and they both grew up in the south. As it turns out, they also share common roots!

Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez met when acting together on the set of Hannah Montana, where Miley played the title role. The two pop stars have stayed in touch occasionally ever since, but they recently reconnected when Selena reached out to Miley over Instagram. Miley invited Selena to chat as a guest on Miley’s Instagram Live show, Bright Minded, and they had a candid and heartfelt conversation about mental health and coping with the challenges of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Miley, born Destiny Hope Cyrus, is the daughter of actress and producer Tish Jean Finley and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They began calling her “Smiley” when she was a baby because she smiled often, and that nickname was eventually shortened to Miley. Dolly Parton, the famous country singer (who, we discovered, is a distant relation of Reese Witherspoon!), is a close friend of Billy Ray’s and was given the honorary role of godmother to Miley. Billy Ray is a direct descendant of Sir Thomas Kempe, MP, who was the sheriff of Kent, England, in the early 17th century.
Selena was born in Texas to actress and producer Mandy Teefey, born Amanda Dawn Cornett, and Ricardo Joel Gomez. Ricardo is of Mexican descent, and Mandy was adopted at a young age, but says she has some Italian roots. Mandy’s adoptive parents, however, are also descendents of Sir Thomas Kempe! Selena’s grandfather is a descendant of Sir Thomas’s son George, while Miley’s dad Billy Ray is a descendant of his son Thomas Jr. That makes Miley and Selena 13th cousins twice removed!
